Following reports of critical Java and Java plug-in vulnerabilities, healthcare professionals remain vigilant about protecting their practice and patient information. Particularly in light of the strengthened Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), recently announced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), practices are reviewing procedures to be certain all policies are aligned with the new measures. The rule impacts all healthcare entities including “business associates” of hospitals, physicians and other HIPAA-covered entities, including practice management software providers.
Since its founding at Georgia Tech’s Advanced Technology and Development Center in 1993, Nuesoft Technologies has developed Internet-only based software, avoiding the Web and the host of potential problems it can cause – including security breaches.
According to Massoud Alibakhsh, Nuesoft CEO and president, “Early on, we recognized the security risks posed by the Web, so we began creating applications that are not browser-based. Rather than routing data along the public connection used by Web traffic, our Internet-based application forms a private, secure connection between medical practices and billing companies and their data,” said Alibakhsh. “You can compare the NueMD system to using a private tunnel to share information between our clients and their data,” he added.
In this way, NueMD clients have a high level of confidence that their data will not be compromised by Web-related vulnerabilities. “We are confident in the security of our system because we know our information is transmitted safely and securely via the Internet versus the Web – even if there are other browser-based problems tomorrow,” said Barbara Dunn, president of MedRecovery Solutions, a large medical billing company based in Houston, TX.
